As Badger is writing this post, Christmas is in the air. No doubt it is cold in the North, but here South of the Equator it is hot and humid. Badger won’t get a white Christmas, but a summer Christmas. It is the Festive Season. The Birth of our Lord. The Nativity Story! The most beautiful story ever told. I am sure all of you who read this post have heard of the story. And if you don’t know it GOOGLE it!
Christmas is here. Badger is a Christian. He gets what Christmas is all about. It is about the birth of Jesus Christ, Our Savior. But he has to be honest. He likes Christmas lights. He likes Christmas Trees and Christmas Music. Therefore he is more English than an Afrikaner. They love decorating. The Afrikaner is more traditional and his XMAS is limited to a braai and going to church.
As a kid Badger loved getting the gifts he always got. A book or a cellphone. But as he got older he realized it was being together with your family and friends and celebrating THE special time of the year.
Badger’s fascination with Christmas began with his Gran. She was an English Lady and every year she decorated her whole house with tinsel and balloons and lights and Christmas ornaments. The menu was prepared a month before the time. There were turkeys, mince pies, Christmas Cake, Shortbread, tongue, Gammon, Christmas pudding (with the coins inside) and all the other lekker food dishes and drinks and always had a Christmas Cracker or two to pull. Everything was decorated with a Christmas theme. The tables, the rooms, the cupboards, everything! We slept on a Christmas bed in front of the Christmas Tree and we left Sprite &Cookies (Milk will get sour in the South African summer nights) for Santa Clause. The next morning the Sprite & Cookies were gone but the presents were there.
And Badgers gran lived in Ladysmith in Kwazulu- Natal, South Africa and every year we would go out at night and go and look at the Christmas Lights the municipality has put on in the main streets of the town. Merciston Street to name one. We would climb into Badger’s dad’s old Kombi and hit the streets.
Then we would go to look at some people’s houses that has Christmas LIGHTS. There were quite a few and it was great to see them. it was known that the homeowners had a competition among themselves to see who would be the best decorated. It was fun. It was tradition. It was part of us. And those outings made Badger enjoy the lights of Christmas. And he has been hooked ever since.
As Badger is writing this piece he is in the Christmas spirit. His man-cave is connected with a stoep overlooking his garden and the street. The whole place is decorated with Christmas lights. In and outside. The Christmas Tree is standing in front of the Window and next to it he has got the Nativity Scene on display with small clay-made Dolls. The railings on the Stoep has got Lights draped around it. There are even lights hanging from the window fences that forms into different objects: Santa Clause climbing a ladder, Santa riding a bicycle and a big candle.
The whole place is so lighted up with Christmas Lights, Badger doesn’t need to switch on the usual lights. No doubt Eskom will spoil the Christmas cheer at the end of the month with their bill, but who cares?! It is Christmas!
His whole man-cave is also placed full of ornaments like Christmas Socks and smaller Christmas trees (different types) so that it could compare with Santa Village’s. Christmas wreaths and mistletoe has already been hung. Everything (and more) that was in Grandma Badger’s house is in the man cave! The only thing Badger needs NOW is snow, some elves and a Mrs. Claus. Christmas Songs is playing from his laptop to give it a Christmas Vibe and he has recorded a lot of Movies with Christmas as a theme on the DSTV decoder.
Every night when Badger switch on the lights he feels like Danny Devito’s character in the movie Deck The Halls who wanted to see his see his house from Space by putting many Christmas lights on his house. I’m not anywhere near that guy, but I’m still in awe with the lights.
To me the lights means peace, hope, prosperity, joy, glee, beauty, life, love, faith and forgiveness! Isn’t that what we all want?

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. Some people has it good, others has it bad. Some people can afford it, some people can’t. And even a Christmas Fanatic like Badger has to admit that Christmas got a big too much commercialized with stuff like Black Friday! But it is a good time to reflex on the year that went by, to be grateful that you’re still here. It is a time for Christians to celebrate the Birth of Jesus, the son of God who died for our sins. It is a time for us to share our love with each other and the word of God!
If I don’t post again this year, have a Merry Christmas. Be safe, drive safely and enjoy your time with your loved ones. To the people of the Jewish religion, Happy Hannukkah. And to the Non Christmas Believers, Merry Christmas anyway!
Here are a few lyrics to one of my favourite Christmas Songs. Read it or listen to it and think about the words….
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.
Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.
Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.
