Rugby League in South Africa

What does Sonny Bill Williams, Carmichael Hunt, Quade Cooper, Jason Robinson, Israel Folua and Gary Botha have in common? They all played Rugby League before they switched codes. As we all in South Africa knows rugby is fifteen players on the field! The English call it Rugby Union. Rugby League is played by 13 men. Professional Leagues are in Australia (NRL) or England. You will be surprise to learn South Africa has a team and our first game was played on the 23 August 1962 were we lost 49-30 to England.

  • We are called the Rhino’s
  • We are ranked 31st
  • We play with Green shirts and black shorts
  • Our Emblem is a Red Protea
  • We played in the 1995 and 2000 Rugby League World Cups
  • Due to Sevens and Rugby Union we don’t have a big player base
  • Our biggest win was in 2006 against Italy 42-6
  • Allan Heldsinger, JP du Plessis, Jarrod Saffy and Brian Skosana are all players who played in the NRL
  • Our Current Captain is Andre Loader
  • Our current coach is Steven van Zyl
  • Tom van Vollenhoven and Gary Botha are Dual Internationals. They played Union and League
  • We have three Rugby League Competitions in South Africa. Tom was inducted into the World Rugby League Hall of Fame
